The Road Runner uses the same base setup as the Belvedere, Satellite, and GTX, but that's where the similarities end because the Road Runner was beefed up for performance in every respect. The Road Runner is the epitome of a old school American made muscle car. There are two distinct versions of the car, the more boxy looking version produced from 1968-1970 version and the more curvy 1971-1975 versions and in my personal opinion they are both cooler than can be. I love this car!

A one-time chicken farmer, Shelby had more than a half-dozen successful careers during his long life: champion race car driver, racing team owner, automotive consultant and safari tour operator. His fabled Shelby Cobra sports car became an automotive and cultural icon, and he was later credited with injecting testosterone into Ford's Mustang and Chrysler's Viper.

When Shelby died Thursday night in a Dallas hospital, he also was one of the nation's longest-living heart transplant recipients, having received a heart on June 7, 1990, from a 34-year-old man who died of an aneurysm. Shelby also received a kidney transplant in 1996 from his son, Michael.

"What made him so unusual is he developed, literally, hundreds of cars," said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson Auction Company. "This guy was 89 years old and he was still developing cars."

Shelby first made his name behind the wheel of a car, winning France's grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car race with teammate Ray Salvadori in 1959. He had turned to the race-car circuit in the 1950s after his chicken ranch failed. He won dozens of races in various classes throughout the 1950s and was twice named Sports Illustrated's Driver of the Year.

He already was suffering serious heart problems when he won Le Mans and ran the race "with nitroglycerin pills under his tongue," his longtime friend, Dick Messer, executive director of Los Angeles' Petersen Automotive Museum, once noted. Soon after his win at Le Mans, he gave up racing and turned his attention to designing high-powered "muscle cars" that eventually became the Shelby Cobra and the Mustang Shelby GT500.

"He's an icon in the medical world and an icon in the automotive world," Messer said.

"His legacy is the diversity of his life," he added. "He's incredibly innovative. His life has always been the reinvention of Carroll Shelby."

The Cobra, which used Ford engines and a British sport car chassis, was the fastest production model ever made when it was displayed at the New York Auto Show in 1962.

A year later, Cobras were winning races over Corvettes, and in 1964 the Rip Chords had a Top 5 hit on the Billboard pop chart with "Hey, Little Cobra." ("Spring, little Cobra, getting ready to strike, spring, little Cobra, with all of your might. Hey, little Cobra, don't you know you're gonna shut `em down?")

In 2007, an 800-horsepower model of the Cobra made in 1966, once Shelby's personal car, sold for $5.5 million at auction, a record for an American car.

"It's a special car. It would do just over three seconds to 60 (mph), 40 years ago," Shelby told the crowd before the sale, held in Scottsdale, Ariz.

It was Lee Iacocca, then head of Ford Motor Co., who assigned Shelby the task of designing a model of Ford's Mustang that could compete against the Corvette for young male buyers. Iacocca often joked that Shelby was so persistent he gave him the money and Ford V-8 engines to build the Cobra just to get him out of his office.

Turning a vehicle he had once dismissed as "a secretary car" into a rumbling, high-performance model was "the hardest thing I've done in my life," Shelby recalled in a 2000 interview with The Associated Press.

That car and the Shelby Cobra made his name a household word in the 1960s.

When the energy crisis of the 1970s limited the market for gas-guzzling high-performance cars, Shelby weathered the downturn by heading to Africa, where he operated a safari company for a dozen years.

By the time he returned to the United States, Iacocca was running Chrysler Motors and he hired Shelby to design the supercharged Viper sports car.

"He was a great friend and we did some really good work together," Iacocca said Friday in a statement.

Inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1992, Shelby worked in recent years as a technical adviser on the Ford GT project and designed the Shelby Series 1 two-seat muscle car, a 21st century clone of his 1965 Cobra. His 2013 Shelby GT500 has the most powerful production V-8 engine in the world - at 662 horses - and a top speed of more than 200 miles per hour. It is arriving in dealerships now. The model that Shelby test drove sold for $350,000 at a charity auction in January.

"I've always been asked, `What is my favorite car?' and I've always said `The next one,'" Shelby said, according to Ford's website. "I'm going to take that back tonight. This is my new favorite car."

Edsel B. Ford, a member of Ford's board of directors, said Friday in a statement that the company had lost a legend.

"Carroll Shelby is one of the most recognized names in performance car history, and he's been successful at everything he's done," Ford said. "Whether helping Ford dominate the 1960s racing scene or building some of the most famous Mustangs, his enthusiasm and passion for great automobiles over six decades has truly inspired everyone who worked with him."

He created the Carroll Shelby Foundation in 1991 to provide assistance for children and young people needing acute coronary and kidney care. According to its website, the foundation has helped numerous children get surgery, as well as provided money for research.

Shelby was born Jan. 11, 1923, in Leesburg, Texas.

During World War II, he was an Army Air Corps flight instructor who corresponded with his fiancée by dropping love letters stuck into his flying boots onto her farm.

After leaving the military in 1945, he started a dump truck business, then decided to raise chickens. The poultry business initially flourished, with Shelby earning a $5,000 profit on the first batch of broilers he delivered. He went broke, however, when his second flock died of disease.

A friend then invited him to become an amateur racer and his success led to his joining the Aston-Martin team and competing in races all over the world.

Shelby had homes in Los Angeles and his native east Texas. Doctors did not immediately release a cause of death.

He is survived by his wife, Cleo Shelby; his three children, Patrick, Michael and Sharon; his sister, Anne Shelby Ellison; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were not immediately announced.

We also had a 1967 Plymouth Fury II, Mom destroyed the '63 Savoy when she pulled out in front of a car from a blind corner, not really her fault. My cousin bought the remains, and that car lived many more years, probably had 200,000 miles on it.  The 67' had the same engine, 318 two barrel carb, nearly bullet proof, and got about 25 miles to the gallon, not kidding!  That car had a curious habit of dying any time you made a left hand turn, man I can remember my Dad letting the swear words fly as he tried to restart that car in the middle of an intersection.  Mom was not all that proud of the way she roughed up the 63', so one summer morning as she sat trying to turn left onto the street we lived on, some dude in a pickup truck, not paying attention, looked up to see the stationary Fury, he cranked it hard right, clipped the right rear corner panel and sailed off into a ditch.  Mom was sent flying to the left, into on coming traffic, where a totally unsuspecting young guy in a '69 El Camino caught her full speed in the left front corner.  That collapsed the front of the Camino, sending him helplessly screeching across four lanes of traffic, without getting hit!  Where as the 63' was only seriously injured, the 67' was a total, luckily Mom was only badly shaken.... ahh the memories.

So, being a old car loving guy, I've decided to list my opinion of the 5 best old-school muscle cars of all-time as well as give you a taste of what they are selling for these days. Therefore without further ado...

1. The 1970 Plymouth 'Cuda'

Of course the legendary 426 c.i. Hemi was the ultimate, but a 383, 340 "AAR", even the lowly base model 318, what classic looks, low mean, a work of art on wheels. This was my dream car as a teenager, nothing else had that brute force mean look. The Cuda looked like the "Wolverine" of cars, small, barrel chested, hairy, cigar chomping, bad ass. Part of Chryslers "Rapid Transit System" line up of hot rods in the early 70's, great colors, powerful engines, and just fantastic American car style. The ultimate for me? 426 Hemi, with the 727 automatic trans, in "Plum Crazy" purple, I couldn't afford one then, and can't now.

2. The 1966 Pontiac GTO

Talk about the vision of cool, narrow black tie, white shirt, black sport coat, Johnny Walker Black label, polished wing tip shoe cool, this car was it. Stacked headlights, sleek body, chrome bumpers, again it doesn't matter if it's the throaty 389 "Tri-Power" with a 4 speed, or the 326 with the 2 speed automatic "Power Glide", simply one of the most beautiful cars ever built in the old USA. I don't think the Fisher body works people ever topped this jewel.

3.The 1969 Mustang Mach I

Oooffff, man..... what a great looking automobile, again street fighter tough looking, great style, sleek lines, a back windshield you can hardly see out of, all the qualities of American  muscle. Ford's Hemi was a disaster, but the 428 Cobra Jet, 390, 351 Windsor, and Cleveland, and the 302 all fantastic V8 engines. One of the best performing, and handling cars of the 60's was the "Boss 302", I'll take  mine in yellow!

4. The 1969 Olds 442

"Four Barrel, Four Speed, Two door" or something like that. For a big car it is beautiful. Crisp sheet metal, classic American muscle style, just a brute. Big bold, and fast, this car looks like it means business just standing still, stuffed with a huge Detroit V8 it has it all going on. One of the few cars that looks intimidating in white with gold stripes.

5. The 1971 Plymouth Road Runner.

O.K, personal bias, my first car was a 1971 Satellite with a 318 and automatic, I pined after a Cuda or Challenger, but could never find one I could afford.  Now looking back on Chryslers "Fuselage" body style, what a home run!!! Maybe some of the first thought to aero-dynamic shaping for a muscle car, smooth body lines, sleek, low style, that amazing one piece looping front bumper, must have been a tooling nightmare. Just look at this car from every angle, it's truly ahead of it's time compared to anything GM or Ford put out in the same year, again you could get the mighty 425 h.p. Chrysler "Hemi", in a assortment of cool colors, "Arrest me Red", "Hemi Orange", "Plum Crazy", "Curious Yellow", "Sublime", "Go Mango", you can't beat that!

The first generation AMC Javelin

The American Motors Corporation is one of the lessor known names in the history of classic American muscle cars however they did succeed in making one of the coolest muscle cars of all-time, the AMC Javelin which evolved from the AMX (American Motors eXperimental). The Javelin had two distinct looking generations: the first generation that lasted from 1968-1970, and the second and somewhat larger generation that was produced from 1971 thru 1974. In my opinion both generations of the Javelin are incredibly cool and I would be proud to have either one in my garage, although if I were forced to pick one over the other I tend to be a bit partial to the first generation Javelin (but only by a hair).

The second generation (and slightly larger) AMC Javelin

The Javelin is known world-wide for it's racing prowess and was extremely successful in the trans-am series in the late 60's. The Javelin had a reputation for being a well handling car which helped it in competition but it was also a very powerful car featuring several factory combinations of high powered v8 engines. Special high performance models of the Javelin were produced as SST Javelin and the Trans-Am Javelinthat were both limited productions and are now some of the most sought-after and collectible muscle cars in existence.

Getting your hands on a well maintained Javelin of any variety can be a challenge however if you are able to find one and buy it or refurbish one that needs a little TLC you are sure to have found a fantastic investment as well as a treasure to tool around any mountain road.

This is the kind of story that I love, this dude named Rick Treworgy in Punta Gorda Florida has so many cool old cars that he buys an old Wal-Mart store just so he can house them all! All of Rick's cars are daily drivers and they appear to be in immaculate condition. He says he started collecting cars back in 1973 and has been ding it ever since. IN the video you can see he has a lot of muscle cars in his collection and it looks like he might be a Chevy guy as you can see several Camaros, Corvettes, Chevelles, Impalas, etc.

The Ford motor company had been producing the Ford Fairlane since the mid 1950's, but it wasn't until 1964 when Ford upped the ante and produced the Fairlane Thunderbolt which is still one of the most impressive muscle cars to come standard out of the factory. The Thunderbolt was packed with enhancements and lightweight performance parts to make the Fairlane Thunderbolt a real REAL screamer! With a 427 cubic inch V8 the Fairlane was light, fast, and extremely cool looking.

In subsequent years Ford added the Fairlane XL, GT, and GTA to the lineup solidifying the Fairlane's place in muscle car history. To this day the Ford Fairlane is one of the most recognizable and popular muscle cars ever made which is both good, and bad, for modern day collectors. Good in that there are a lot of Fairlane's out there to pick from but also bad in that their popularity can make their prices be a tad higher than some other lesser known muscle cars. The Ford Fairlane is a classic American old-school muscle car and if you can get your hands on one you will have made a great investment.

The Ford Galaxie is a classic American car, and clearly one of the pioneers of the muscle car movement. The Galaxie isn't as sleek or sporty looking as some of the other muscle cars of it's era but that doesn't mean it was any less of a beast. The Ford Galaxie went through 4 distinct generations, but my favorite generation was the the third which was produced from 1965 through 1968. And to be even more specific the 1966 Ford Galaxie is my all-time favorite version of the car.

The Ford Galaxie was beefed up in the mid 60's with Ford's desire to be competitive in the NASCAR circuit. Which in turn meant they had to produce some high performance versions of the car to be sold at the dealerships (hooray for the consumer!). The Galaxie was a very popular car and remains popular to this day. That popularity means there are a ton of old Galaxies out there for sale but it also means they can fetch a slightly higher price due to their demand.

The Plymouth Barracuda is synonymous with the muscle car. There is no doubt that if there were a muscle car hall of fame the Barracuda would be at the head of the pack. There may not be a more beautiful car ever produced. The Barracuda had three distinct looks (generations) but the Barracuda is best known for it's third iteration that was produced from 1970-1974. Although I personally love each generation of the Barracuda and I have found some older Barracudas for sale.

The Cuda was a beast of a machine, you could order it from the factory in a variety of performance combinations yet the 426 cubic inch hemi was one of the more sought after power plants. The Barracuda was also built to handle and Plymouth even released an All American Racer (AAR) version of the car that was fashioned after the Cuda's that Swede Savage and Dan Gurney raced in the Trans Am series.

Unlike the Challenger (the Cudas sister car) the Barracuda was never revived by Chrysler and of coure the Plymouth line was eventually killed off so it isn't likely we will ever see a new version of the Cuda. That might be a good thing for collectors because the Cuda remains pure and therefore makes a marvelous investment.

The Oldsmobile 442 had a long and successful run as a true classic American Muscle car. From 1964 all the way thru 1976 the car fulfilled the role as one of America's favorite muscle cars. The 442 stayed in production long after 1976 but we don't consider it to be a true muscle car after the 1976 version. The most desirable version of the car is from 1968 thru 1970, in those years the 442 was stunning looking and packed with high performance options. Trust me when I tell you the 442 was no slouch in the area of "get up and go" as you could order one straight from the factory with a massive 455 cubic inch V8!

The 442 is still one of the most popular and well recognized muscle cars ever produced and therefore can be a fantastic investment for any muscle car enthusiast. The 442 was also released as a convertible, and as a station wagon. Personally I think the Olds 442 station wagon is the coolest looking station wagon ever produced. Can you imagine cruising the wife and kids on a family vacation to the grand canyon in one of these monsters?
